About Us

I am a pediatrician at St. Luke's Hospital.

I want to inform you all about a recently announced plan to cut medical services to the women and children of our city. The administration at CPMC, in an attempt to reduce costs at St. Luke's, plans to close the pediatric inpatient service and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit by Nov. 15th. The result of this closure, which reduces the number of qualified caregivers needed to resuscitate newborns, will have disastrous effects on the women and children who have come to depend on the quality medical care they receive at our hospital. Currently 1300 babies are born annually at St. Luke's. The majority come from low income, minority families. The only other hospital south of Market is SF General Hospital which is already overburdened.

If you or any of your contacts are interested is supporting our attempts to maintain quality services at St. Lukes' please join us at a public hearing Thursday, October 25th, 1:00pm room 263 of City Hall.

St. Luke's physicians and nurses desperately need your help getting the word out about this impending crisis. Please feel free to forward this message or contact me for further information.

Thanks,
Karen Makely, MD
Department of Pediatrics
