On Wednesday, November 28, nine St. Lukes Hospital
physicians leaders and one nurse leader met for an hour with Phil
Ginsburg, the Chief of Staff to Mayor Newsom, to discuss our grave
concerns over CPMC's plan to close acute care services at St. Luke's
Hospital. Supervisor Alioto-Pier, who arranged for this
meeting on our behalf, and her aide Catherine Stefani were also there,
along with 2 members of the Mayors staff involved in health issues.

No agreement has yet been reached
in response to CPMC's stated intention to close the SLH NICU. It has
been brought to my attention that my recent blog was premature, and it
has been edited to reflect that to minimize confusion. Mea culpa!
Any final proposal must be reviewed by all nursing, as well
as medical staff concerned, and administration. Nothing will be agreed
to by health care staff that will compromise the standard of care
necessary for safe deliveries at St Luke's Hospital!

The Hearing on the closure of the 10th Floor and the subsequent crowded
and chaotic conditions on the 9th Floor, was small but spirited today.
Small because the hearing had been canceled last week in hopes that CPMC
would respond more proactively to Sup. Alioto-Pier's request for the
halting of closures. When that did not materialize, it went forward
today as originally planned...Spirited, because the need to hold CPMC
accountable to its recent promises at the Health Commission Hearing to
collaboration and dialog with St. Luke's staff and City officials and
other stakeholders.

Meetings and discussions of the possible
fate of Inpatient Pediatrics are proceeding, as St. Luke's doctors argue
that care has been excellent in spite of the low census, and that it meets
all the standards that are used as official guidelines for community
hospital children's inpatient care. St. Luke's Pediatric Ward has a
documented record of excellent quality including a State of California award
for the treatment of pediatric asthma. CPMC administrators have tried to
justify closure on the basis that, in general, statistics show that wards
with low census have lower quailty of care. It would seem they should
applaud St. Luke's for having unusually high quality of care for such a
small unit!

On Wednesday, Nov 21, CPMC responded to Supervisor
Alioto-Pier's letter (see previous blog) requesting a halt to closure and
transfers of services at St. Luke's Hospital. In a letter Martin Brotman,
MD, CEO, reported that CPMC had asked the Health Commission to postpone the
Prop Q Hearings until sometime in January. The reason given for this change
was to enable them to have additional time to review their plans. However,
the Health Commission has decided to not delay the Prop Q but to proceed on
the original date of Dec 4 at 3 PM. See

Planned
